The Manchester City midfielder, João Cancelo, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to an ankle injury he sustained during training on Thursday.
The Portugal international was playing in the club's pre-season friendly against Al-Hilal when he twisted his ankle and had to be taken off the pitch. The severity of the injury is yet to be confirmed but it appears that he will not return to action until after the World Cup in Qatar.
Cancelo, who joined Al-Hilal from Manchester City in January, has made two appearances for the Saudi Arabian side so far this season. He has also featured in one match for Portugal in their preparations for the tournament.
Cancelo's absence will undoubtedly be a blow for Manchester City as they look to defend their Premier League title this season. They currently sit second in the table with 24 points,Campeonato Brasileiro Action six behind leaders Liverpool.
It remains to be seen how much time Cancelo will miss and whether he will require surgery or rehabilitation. However, it is clear that the injury could have significant implications for Manchester City's campaign.
